A change of Autumn focus?
The Governments approach is the right approach for two principal reasons (amongst many others). Firstly, by taking the lowest earners out of paying tax altogether. This may lead to reduction in the sum of benefits they’re entitled to, with such reductions applying to all, so its application is on a fair basis – it makes no sense to take your earnings away in taxes and then return it to you in the form of higher benefits payments. Secondly, by ensuring your have more money in your pocket, it takes people away the ‘dependency’ on such benefits. Hard work pays and, the Government is, as it should be, encouraging this and affording people the chance to better themselves. Not dictating how they should be spending their money. Spelt out in the Autumn Statement:
https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/autumn-statement-2014
A strong economy is the backbone to Government spending, Government investment and tax cuts for all. And herein lies the problem with the Labour mantra. They propagate taxing the richest in society to appease the poorest, not help them. It’s a bare threat which Labour will not deliver.
Let’s not forget under 13 long years of the Labour Government, the top rate of tax was 40% other than the last 6 months of a Labour Government following the ‘financial crisis’; they bowed to the city’s demands which led to the banking crisis; had more tax holes than a slice of leerdammer cheese; utility prices rocketed; they burdened (backdoor privatisation) the NHS, schools under their PFI scheme – debts which are causing the failures of NHS Trusts, not the spending cuts. There was no control of our borders let alone our benefits system. This hurt the poorest and most vulnerable in society.
Labour’s approach is all wrong – like it or not, the richest in society contribute more proportionality through job creation, wealth creation, investments than the poorest. Yes they benefit the most as well, but this does not take away the first part. Helping the poorest in society requires a Government to help them make the most of the opportunities presented. Not cause resentment by keeping them on state benefits.
